hello dear friends,
last week i wrote about a current hyperfixation of mine for the closed loop cooking newsletter: historical cookbooks! specifically, the american woman’s cookbook, published in 1939 and edited by my new idol, ruth berolzheimer. not only did ruth edit of one of the most well-loved cookbooks of the mid 20th century, she also founded a hebrew school in her neighborhood at 17, was the second woman ever to graduate from the university of illinois with a degree in mechanical engineering, and served as managing editor of popular nyc food mag good eating, before becoming director of the culinary arts institute in chicago, which at the time was the nation’s foremost publisher of cookbooks. netflix miniseries when??
i talked about some of my favorite sections in the american woman’s cookbook — taffy pulls and popcorn-ball parties among them — and even made one of ruth’s recipes myself. read the story here, and if you’re not already subscribed to clc weekly, come join the fam! we’ve got fun stuff for you to read, eat, and click on every friday morning :)

Ah, blushing over here, I appreciate it 😭
Love that Seder set, the colours are stunning! I learned *so* much from that Vogue piece. The adjacency to “art-teacher dressing” definitely helped contextualise it for me. “It shares hemlines and certain watchwords with cottagecore, but its vibe is cooler” was a ferocious - and valid - burn.
