plant matter 1.23.23
welcome to a new week, i hope you’re entering gently.
it’s trite to talk about weather in the midwest but we haven’t seen sunshine in two weeks and i may literally wither of serotonin depletion. as usual, i’ve turned to books for solace. so while joie de vivre may be beyond reach, my reading has been prolific.
i finished prince harry’s memoir, spare, which should have been edited down to a third of its length but rewards you with some juicy insights if you’re willing to wade through a fair bit of un-self-aware / out-of-touch-ness. i found the third section to be most impactful.
aubrey gordon of maintenance phase wrote what is essentially a toolkit for debunking anti-fat bias in her new book ‘you just need to lose weight’: and 19 other myths about fat people and i really can’t recommend it enough. also go watch this banger of an author talk with virginia sole-smith of burnt toast.
i guess i’m on a memoir kick because i also picked up deaf utopia by nyle dimarco on the recommendation of a few bookish friends who said it was a great complement to true biz (which made my 2022 top ten). dimarco became a cultural icon of the deaf community after competing in and winning both america’s next top model and dancing with the stars. this was a quick and touching read, and it made me really want to take a sign language class.
finally, i read hell bent by leigh bardugo, the sequel to ninth house (which also would have made my top ten of last year but i kept it to 2022 releases). okay this book was a bit much at times but i was extremely entertained. i will always fall for dark academia.
have you read anything good lately? did you also want to throw your kindle across the room when you got to the part about harry’s polar adventure (iykyk)? hit reply and let me know please!
