hello, dearest readers!
some exciting news in this issue - i’m doing a *very* limited drop of plant matter ginger spice cookies for cozy szn!
this will be a local endeavor, so if you’re not in chicago or you’re not interested in ordering plant-based baked goods from me, feel free to skip to the links + other fun things below.
please fill out THIS ORDER FORM to snag your vegan ginger spice cookies! all the info you need should be in the form, but you can respond to this email if you have any questions and i’ll get back to you right away!
orders must be placed by 10am this saturday 12.18 (gotta move quickly here!) and you’ll receive your cookies on monday 12.20.
i might be biased but i think these would make a particularly sweet holiday surprise for your local friends and fam. also, if you want to order 4 dozen for just yourself to stick in the freezer and thaw in batches to keep your tastebuds warm throughout bleak winter weeks, i certainly won’t stop you!
💙 links + things 💙
i set a fairly arbitrary goal to read 35 books in 2021 and i’m currently on my 34th! there were a number of real stunners among them and i’m thinking of sending out a special ‘plant matter reads’ issue to round them up in one place (is that something you’d be interested in?) i’ll list a few here for now, because books are always a great last minute gift (this is a non-christonormative newsletter and hannukah has come and gone, but i assume some of you celebrate national late stage capitalism day 🥰)
two fiction recs: the invisible life of addie larue by v.e. schwab + the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid
two memoir recs: hola papi: how to come out in a walmart parking lot and other life lessons by john paul brammer + fairest by meredith talusan
i’ve been doing some writing for farm.vc — a new climate investment platform focused on land restoration on the great plains. this is the kind of research-heavy, nerd-out-on-soil-facts, work that i just love, and i’m so excited to get to do it for this rad startup! check it out if you want to learn about agroecology, animal ag and climate change, or the failings of the u.s. electric grid. i’m especially proud of this deep dive (ha) on the ogallala aquifer.
mari andrew, prolific illustrator and capturer of emotions i didn’t even know i needed to see reflected, recently launched a newsletter called out of the blue. each missive is as poignant and soothing as expected.
butter mochi meets diet culture resistance in a portland home kitchen: food52 profiled the wonderful daphne kauahi’ilani jenkins, who i’ve had the pleasure of getting to know through closed loop cooking. i ask myself why i don’t live in pdx every time she posts a mochi drop 😭
just a pot i really love.
no need to cry over it.
how pretty are these plantable botanical cards?
if you enjoy this newsletter, consider supporting so i can invest more in the future of plant matter! every tiny bit helps. here are a few ways you can do that:
help me grow the plant matter community by clicking THIS LINK, which will create a cute pre-written email you can shoot off to pals super quickly and easily. or share a screenshot on your instagram story, text your mom about it. whatever!
support me directly on venmo @maia-welbel or paypal
if you want to purchase something i’ve recommended, clicking directly through the links in the newsletter will sometimes give me a tiny commission (most links are not affiliate, but some like made trade, goldune, and book shop are!)
thanks for being here!
